About Sketchbook Sessions
Sketchbook Sessions (SBS) is a group of artists that gather together on a regular basis to draw. This is a simple concept that yields revolutionary results. Based in Los Angeles, SBS has drawn together a large group of diverse people, forming networks of friends and associates. Session members inspire, encourage, and teach each other, exponentially expanding their skills and talents.
We encourage artists in other cities to start their own gatherings. New York has the Sketchkult. Chicago and San Diego are close to forming regular groups. Start your own!
We meet once a week at a coffee shop in Burbank,
and once a month at a house in Chatsworth. If you live in the area,
and are interested in joining, write us an email, we'd love to
meet you!
History:
Sketchbook Sessions is the brainchild of Shane Corn (maizekid)
who craved the creative camaraderie of other artists. A member of The Drawing
Board, an online forum hosted by Shane Glines, Corn called out to his fellow
members in Los Angeles to meet and draw. He graciously, and bravely, opened his
house to this meeting. In October 2001, seven people showed up. Beginning in
the afternoon, the seven drew and talked until late into the night. At this first
meeting a precedent was formed: Draw in other peoples books. This concept allowed
for more intermingling and became the backbone of future meetings. They continued
to communicate via the Drawing Board and over email. A month later Corn again
hosted a ‘Session’. Through word of mouth the turn out improved.
After having a session each month for the next year and a half, increasing the
attendance to at times 40 people, the core members of the group, now fast friends,
decided to publish a book of sketches to sell at the San Diego Comic Con. "Sketchbook
Sessions" was
coined, the book was printed and it was a tremendous success at the Convention.
The group met their online host Shane Glines, who informed them he wished to
step down from his duties on The Drawing Board. He handed the reigns to the Session
members, who had formed their own website for the Convention. Since then The
Drawing Board, an online haven for amateurs and professionals alike, is administered
by Rob Henry (sukeband) and Rick Cortes (hellboyone).
We encourage all artists to visit the Forum and look around. You will find yourself
coming back every day.
